Employers Liability Tracing Office (ELTO) is a new independent, industry body which has been set up to make it much easier for injured employees to trace their employer’s or former employer’s, Employers Liability (EL) insurers. 
Employers Liability insurance allows organisations to meet the costs of damages and legal fees for employees who are injured or made ill at work through the fault of the employer.

Sometimes it can take a long time before any symptoms appear, and by the time an individual needs to make a claim, it can be difficult for that person to find out who their EL insurer was at the time of the original injury.

UK organisations and businesses, including the majority of Baptist churches that employ one or more people who are paid at or above £503.00, per month, will be given an an Employers Reference Number (ERN), sometimes referred to as the Employer PAYE Reference by HMRC. This is the reference number for their employee’s income tax and national insurance contributions.  If you, or your organisation, have an ERN number we have to collect it and submit it to ELTO.

Some organisations will not have an ERN because they either have no direct employees or pay each of their employees less than £503.00 per month.  If you do not have an ERN number we still need to record this fact and advise ELTO that you are exempt. 

You’ll be able to find your ERN on mandatory documents such as the P45, P60, P11D and on most payslips. If your organisation has more than one ERN, you must individually provide each number together with the name of the subsidiary company.

What do you need to do now?
Before 31 March 2012, you will need to do one of the following:
• Register your ERN number.
• Register that you or your organisation is exempt.

To complete your return you will need to have the following to hand: ERN number (if you have one), your policy number and name of the insured.

If you have more than one ERN number, you will need to send us an email, to ern@baptist-ins.com , with the your policy number, the name of the insured, including the names of any subsidiary companies because the website will only allow you to submit one ERN number.

If you are exempt, please just include the information above and include “I am exempt”.
